How Do I Know If I Need Electrolysis?
After experiencing laser-induced hair growth, people frequently find it difficult to trust another hair removal method. There is so much conflicting information out there in the digital space turning the task of finding a permanent hair removal solution into an overwhelming mission. We are going to try to help make this decision easier and explain the reasons behind our recommendations for electrolysis treatment.
Is the hair on your face, neck, torso or upper arms?
Hair that grows in androgen-dependent sites like the lip, chin, jawline, chest, back and upper arms carries a risk of becoming stimulated by other treatments. While still visible and bothersome, it is often fine and shallow-rooted or it presents as a mixture of finer and coarser hair. Fine hair is more challenging for laser treatments to target due to the smaller, dryer and paler root structure. The combination of repeated unsuccessful treatments (whether laser or waxing), skin trauma and increased blood supply in an area sensitive to hormonal stimulation in a person with hormonal fluctuations often results in laser-induced hair growth or paradoxical hypertrichosis.
In this scenario, the safer option is choosing electrolysis permanent hair removal.
Is the hair fine in texture?
While electrolysis delivers permanent hair removal on all hair textures because we deliver energy directly to the root, laser treatments are dependent on thick, dark and moist hair roots to work. So for fine, light hair, choose electrolysis.
The exception to this rule is laser-induced hair. While there has been sparse anecdotal evidence that short-pulsed or Q-switched NdYag laser can help with laser-induced growth, the results seem to be very limited compared to the permanent hair removal a highly-skilled electrologist can deliver in such cases.
Is there a visible contrast between your hair and skin colour?
If your hair is dark but so is your skin and there is little contrast between the two, then electrolysis is your best option. Laser treatment relies on the pigment to work and when there is a similar amount and colour of pigment on the skin and hair, there is a high risk of burning the skin.
Other methods of hair removal?
Electrolysis (probe) method is the only permanent hair removal method because it can treat every hair colour and texture. Laser method delivers permanent reduction for the right candidate with dark, coarse hair.
Waxing, sugaring, plucking and threading are essentially the same as they tear the hair out but do not target the living, reproductive potential of the hair follicle. The hair regrows after a short period of recovery. Waxing and sugaring are usually better at managing to pull the hair root out and give slightly better temporary results. Some people report that after 20 years of waxing, they have little growth left on non-androgen-dependent areas like the legs. It is unclear if this is due to the natural loss of follicles that happens with age and if this process is sped up by waxing/sugaring.
Threading and plucking often result in breaking the hair inside the follicle. The remaining hair fibre has a sharp, irritating end that causes inflammation in the already traumatised skin. We see ingrown hairs, skin inflammation and post-inflammatory pigmentation as common results from plucking on our clients’ skin.
Is the hair on your lower arms, legs, bikini and underarms?
Hair growing in non-androgen-dependent areas develops in puberty and is usually deep-rooted and dark making it a great choice for laser hair removal treatment. If any hair is left in the area after that, it can be cleared by electrolysis.
Is the hair blond, grey or red colour?
Lighter than brown and black hair lacks the pigment necessary for successful laser treatment. Therefore, it is more suitable for electrolysis permanent hair removal. Sometimes laser treatment in areas that have started turning grey will cause more hair to turn grey rather than successfully treat the dark hair, so weigh up your options carefully. You will also notice, that completely gray areas will start growing dark hair again with electrolysis treatment. This is a result of the healing processes and the skin rejuvenation that happens after treatment. In our experience, laser treatment is still unsuccessful on this type of hair.
Are you able to allow the hair to grow for 3 days or 3 mm above the skin?
For electrolysis hair removal treatment we need to be able to see the hair above the skin surface as the hair fibre shows us where to find the root under the skin. Most clients find a way to grow their hair long enough for treatment. The discomfort is only short-lived as we remove the hair during treatment. Rarely, people will have absolutely no way of growing their hair out. Sadly, we are unable to treat such clients.
Shaving/dermaplanning?
Contrary to popular belief, shaving has the least stimulating effect on hair growth. There have been clinical studies proving it does not make hair grow stronger. While it may allow you to see the full density and strength of the hair growth that’s present, especially after waxing or laser treatments, it does not affect the skin and hair root.
There are some opinions that dermaplanning can stimulate hair growth, but no scientifically supported evidence. It is possible that removing the upper layers of the skin together with the hair will have a similar effect to peels and microdermabrasion in stimulating the basal layer cell turnover which could potentially speed up hair growth. Another suggestion is that increased blood flow brings nutrients and hormones to the area, stimulating hair growth. This is something we also see when clients come back from holidays in hot, sunny climates – a sudden growth spurt appears. It is also very likely that the higher androgen levels of PCOS and menopausal sufferers slowly but steadily stimulate the fine facial hair to lengthen and darken.
